Configuring Checkout Settings for Your Storefronts

Zest's checkout settings give you control over the customer experience at the point of purchase, from how much information gifters are required to enter to how gift notes are handled by your fulfillment team. Configuring these settings correctly helps streamline the checkout experience, improve conversion rates, and ensure your downstream fulfillment processes run smoothly.

Before diving in, keep the following in mind:

  • Consult your fulfillment team about gift note character and line limits before saving those settings.

  • Work with your marketing team to understand what information they expect to gather about the customer.

  • Check your downstream SMS and email communication flows before enabling phone number collection to avoid over-messaging customers.

Billing Address Collection

Under Billing address collection, choose your preferred option.

  • Select Require full billing address to require customers to enter their complete billing details.

    • If your marketing team sends mailers to addresses collected for customers at the time of purchase, you will need to use this setting.

  • Select Collect the minimum billing address information required by your payment processor.

    • Customers will only be asked for the minimum required billing address information required by your payment processor (e.g. strictly ZIP code). This is generally better for conversion as there are fewer fields for the customer to fill out. Because of this, Zest does not have a full billing address to provide in your Shopify orders.

Note: If you select to require a full billing address, you will be required to add a billing address to Concierge Orders as you generate them in order for them to save.

Phone Number Collection

Under Phone number collection, choose your preferred option for collecting the gifter’s, not the recipient’s, phone number at checkout:

  • Select Require customer phone number if you want gifters to provide a phone number at checkout. If you enable this setting, confirm that your downstream communications won't trigger excessive SMS notifications to customers.

  • Select Do not collect customer phone number to skip this field and not ask gifters for their phone number.

Note: If you select to require a phone number, you will be required to add a phone to Concierge Orders as you generate them in order for them to save.

Maximum Recipients

Enter a number to restrict how many recipients a gifter can include in a single storefront order.

Note: This default can be overridden at the individual storefront level.

Collect a Gift Note

A printed gift note for the recipient is an expected experience and recommended for all Zest brands even if you are printing the message on a packing slip.

  • Select Collect gift notes on all gifts if your fulfillment system is able to print gift messages and include a physical gift note with orders

  • Select Collect gift notes only on e-gifts if your fulfillment system does not support printed messages and they can only be delivered digitally.

Collect a "From" Field

The From field allows the customer to enter text that reflects who the gift is from, not the billing first and last name. This allows for groups (for example, McDuck Financial Group) to be included in the gift message and helps alleviate any confusion when the recipient receives their gift, which further prevents customer support inquiries.

It's recommended to collect the from field on all messages.

  • Select Collect “from” field on all gifts if your downstream fulfillment system supports printing the "from" field on physical printed gift notes

  • Select Collect “from” field only on e-gifts if your fulfillment system does not support printing this field on physical gift notes. If your fulfillment system does not support printed physical notes in any capacity, choose this option.

Gift Note Maximum Characters

Enter the character limit for physical printed gift notes.

Note: Check with your fulfillment team to confirm the exact limit supported by their system.

Gift Note Maximum Lines

Enter a number to cap the number of lines a gifter can use in their gift note, or leave the field empty for no limit.

Customer’s Email Address

The customer’s email address is collected at the time of purchase. By default, the email address is not pushed into your Shopify order and a proxy email address is used. By using the proxy email address for the customer, it prevents the need for you to configure settings to suppress transactional emails sent to Zest orders.

If you need the customer’s email address in your Shopify orders, you can configure the Shopify order format to include this as an order attribute or metafield to use with downstream systems.
